In the midst of the pandemic our family began the process of a social transition for our 6-year-old. While this development was not a surprise to us, we felt lost while navigating the ins and outs of this change. How do we tell friends and family? Will the school be supportive? How will their classmates respond? While we don’t need medical assistance yet, what are the steps? How do we change names and legal markers? We felt confused and alone. We looked for support groups but could not find any for young children. It was a difficult time.

About a year later in a meeting with our pediatrician, we lamented our struggle with underwear. It was suggested we try a brand that makes undergarments for trans kids. We were over the moon to have found a solution, but that excitement faded quickly when we saw the cost. One pair of underwear cost more than we spent on underwear for both of our kids for a year. It felt like price gouging and taking advantage of a marginalized population. How can any family afford this?

While we didn’t know many people going through the same struggles, we knew we weren’t alone. This was the catalyst for starting The Gender Diversity Empowerment Network. Faced with the challenges and uncertainties that often accompany raising a transgender child, we decided to take matters into our own hands. By combining our passion for helping others with years of experience in fashion design, we are working to establish a safe and welcoming space for families navigating similar paths. No family should feel alone, and no child should be denied access to clothing that affirms their gender.
